Seed Pods

Artist Statement about seed pods.

For much of my life I have been a collector of found objects, small stones, shells and interesting pieces of driftwood gathered from a walk on the beach or delicate seedpods plucked from my garden as the summer season comes to a close. I have collected examples of seedpods for many years, each with incredibly beautiful, intricate forms and textures. These tiny seed vessels have been rich potential for creative exploration and became the catalyst for this new body of work.

Many of these unglazed, clay sculptures were thrown on the wheel and altered with hand built additions while others were sculpted by hand. These sensuous, smoke-fired vessels have been meticulously burnished with a river stone and given over to the fire to breathe life into each piece. The smoke and flame of the fire creates a quiet beauty, richly marked with visual texture and colour.

It is my intention that these vessels evoke a sense of hope and renewal, a feeling of stillness and tranquility, reminding the viewer of the promise of Spring and the beauty of nature.
